11 CRITICAL OCEAN ISSUES

SeaKeepers has released a major new report: "11 Critical Ocean Issues, with Action Items for Concerned Citizens". In announcing the report to the members, CEO John Englander states:
There are a number of ocean issues that are becoming critical. In spite of the findings of the US Commission on Ocean Policy which delivered its findings to the White House and the Congress in September 2004, the funding for the recommended changes has actually diminished. We have identified the need for a broad agenda to arrest the decline in our fisheries, water quality for recreation, coral reefs, and general marine ecosystem. What is at stake is nothing less than the health of the oceans for future generations.

We feel there are too many splintered groups and efforts. We need a cross cutting platform and must include ways that any individual citizen or group can make a difference. We now offer this 35-page document to our members, to other concerned marine environmental organizations, and to the public as a common platform from which to work. We invite input and suggestions for improvement to this first edition published in January 2006. The initial reviews by prominent ocean authorities has been very gratifying. Let us remember as we chase our dreams into the stars that our first responsibility is to our Earth, to our children, to ourselves. Yes, let us dream, let us pursue those dreams, but let us also preserve the fragile world we inhabit.
Pres. George Bush (1989)

An estimated 50 million sharks are caught unintentionally as bycatch in commercial fisheries every year. Some of the most troublesome fishing gear for sharks are longlines, trawls and gillnets. (From Oceana Website)
