Scientific Advisory Council Member

Ralph Rayner, Ph.D.

Following completion of a first degree in biology, and a masters in underwater science and technology, Ralph Rayner undertook research into the physical oceanography of the Indian Ocean Chagos Archipelago, leading to award of his doctorate in 1982.

Through much of his professional career he has been engaged in the commercial provision of meteorological and oceanographic products and services. In parallel with his commercial activities he has played an active part in the marine scientific community though membership of professional associations, committees and working groups, peer review, lecturing and authorship of books and scientific papers.

In 1994 he formed Global Environmental and Ocean Sciences Limited (GEOS), subsequently acquired by the Fugro Group in 1996. He continued to be responsible for the overall direction of the business which became the world leader in the provision of oceanographic and marine meteorological services.

He is currently responsible for industry outreach for the US Integrated Ocean Observing System at the Consortium for Ocean Leadership, works at Board level with a number of specialist ocean science and technology businesses and is a professorial research fellow at the London School of Economics.

He has authored numerous marine scientific papers and reports and is editor in chief of the Journal of Operational Oceanography.
