The Society

Mission

SeaKeepers is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to inspire the leaders of the world to become a voice for the oceans, by bridging the gaps between good science and the business and yachting communities.

Vision

SeaKeepers believe that accurate data is essential to improving the environment through protecting the seas. As a Private/Public collaborative effort, the Society focuses on critical ocean issues in cooperation with government agencies, other like minded organizations, the academic community, and the public.  Our motto is,

 “Protect, Preserve and Restore”

The International SeaKeepers Society is a non‐political, non- profit international institution focusing on the marine environment.

The Society is an organization of opinion leaders which believes that the best way to protect the environment is to protect the world’s oceans. SeaKeepers’ mission is to gather and distribute the most useful oceanographic and atmospheric data from which to draw rational conclusions concerning the health of the world’s oceans and climate. This data is provided to governments, scientists, educational institutions and private citizens throughout the world.

  • The Society provides funding and/or support to the scientific community with specific focus on the use of data for marine preservation and restoration (universities and like-minded organizations).
  • The Society serves as an advocate to protect the marine environment.
  • The society promotes educational opportunities on ocean issues.

History

The International SeaKeepers was founded in 1998 by a small group of yacht owners who were horrified by the deteriorating conditions of the seas. Their initial mission was to develop a compact, automated and cost-effective ocean and atmospheric monitoring system to install aboard their yachts, providing data to scientists on the health of the world’s oceans. Our innovative SeaKeeper 1000™ is now deployed in more than 45 locations around the world, including yachts, cruise ships, ferry boats, buoys and piers.

The SeaKeeper 1000™ is endorsed by the United Nations and the World Meteorological Organization.  NOAA and the U.S. National Weather Service continue to purchase the SeaKeeper 1000 for NOAA vessels, and are adding SeaKeeper's oceanographic monitoring to many of the government weather buoys moored at sea.

Members of the SeaKeepers Society recognize the ocean’s critical importance to the life of our planet and are deeply committed to finding real-world solutions to the problems now plaguing our seas. Our small, but very influential membership includes entrepreneurs, yachtsmen, corporations, divers, scientists and concerned citizens committed to this global effort to help protect,, preserve and restore our world’s oceans.
