Critical Ocean Issues: What You Can Do Today To Make A Difference Tomorrow
Our oceans are in crisis. Decades of overuse and exploitation have presented mankind with complex, costly and global ocean issues. It is difficult to prioritize or single out any one issue over another; all have significant and varying impacts on humans, marine life, and the environment, and are all very much interrelated.
As with any highly complex problem, there is no single solution. What does work is identifying a specific set of initiatives, getting input and agreement from others working on the same issue, and then moving forward from a common agenda. From this viewpoint, SeaKeepers is proud to announce the publishing of our new booklet, Critical Ocean Issues: With Action Items for Concerned Citizens.
Critical Ocean Issues: With Action Items for Concerned Citizens, is an easy to understand, unbiased, full-spectrum account of the ocean crises that avoids jargon and deep science. More importantly, this booklet provides clear suggestions on what each global citizen can do now to make a difference tomorrow. With support from Duke University’s Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions, a 4-step “framework of action” has been developed that individuals can follow not only to improve the health of the oceans, but to apply to any important social issue.
By way of Critical Ocean Issues, SeaKeepers seeks to encourage a dialogue among all who are concerned about the health of oceans. Coupled with the actions suggested, dialogue will contribute to the revitalization of our oceans and planet. Individual copies of Critical Ocean Issues are available for $14.95 through www.seakeepers.org. However, this primer should be in every home, school, business, and government office. For information on how to showcase your commitment to healthy oceans via a private-label sponsorship, please write to oceanissues@seakeepers.org.
Our past, our present, and whatever remains of our future,
absolutely depend on what we do now.
– Dr. Sylvia Earle
Praise For Critical Ocean Issues
With this report…SeaKeepers has made another valuable contribution. This easy to read document fills the need for a broad perspective across many of the ocean crises, with specific things that one concerned person can pursue. This agenda will be valuable not only to their members, but to the public as well. Bravo! -- Jean-Michel Cousteau, President, Ocean Futures Society; Environmentalist; Film & Television Producer
I commend the SeaKeepers Society for its leadership in helping define the most critical issues facing our oceans and its dedication to address these issues through personal actions, community engagement and outreach to our elected officials. It is incumbent upon those of us who spend our time on and under the sea, whether it is for work or pleasure, to improve our understanding and stewardship of our most valuable resource. -- Dr. Robert Gagosian, President, Consortium for Ocean Leadership; Former President, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
I want to congratulate SeaKeepers for this report and its continuing efforts to address the issues the ocean faces today. Our ocean is in great need in our time to address the effects of overuse and exploitation. This report correctly engages the public to seize opportunities and to make a difference in how our Nation addresses the issues we face. In the end, it will take the resolve of our citizens and the strength of our determination to change the course of ocean management for future generations.-- Dan Basta, Director of the National Marine Sanctuaries, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
