Past Chairman, J. Mark Grosvenor

J. Mark GrosvenorJ. Mark Grosvenor is Chief Executive Officer of Grosvenor Industries, originally established in San Diego nearly three decades ago. Grosvenor Industries also owns and operates Grosvenor Square Shopping Center.

An avid and experienced cruising sailor, Mark joined SeaKeepers in 2002 and in 2003 became the Society’s third Board Chairman, a position he held for three years. He brought a wealth of business acumen and management experience to SeaKeepers at a critical time of change and growth for the organization. Mark’s strong leadership skills and desire served as a catalyst for critical strategic planning and left an indelible mark on the Society, which he continues to support with enthusiasm and passion. Having recently sold their last yacht, a custom Dutch-built expedition-style boat, Mark and his wife, Melissa, and their two children are in the middle of planning a multi-year, round-the-world cruise on their next vessel, which will begin construction shortly. “I am extremely proud to be a part of SeaKeepers,” Grosvenor says. “The sea has provided me and my family some of the most wonderful experiences of our lives. I am delighted to recommend my friends and associates for membership in SeaKeepers because I know those who join will enjoy the camaraderie as much as we have, as well as the knowledge they are playing a pivotal role in protecting and restoring a resource we all need to thrive.”

Under his leadership, Grosvenor Industries has built three hotels and has become involved with many other national businesses. In 1984, Mark started Medallion Foods, Inc. in Newport, Arkansas, a snack food manufacturing company supplying Wal-Mart, Sam's Club and Costco as well as other companies. In 1989, Grosvenor formed GHG Hospitality, Inc., which owns and operates eleven hospitality projects including motels, hotels, resorts, and marinas across the United States. A graduate of San Diego State University, Mark holds a bachelor's degree in business and finance.

Besides his interest in marine conservation, Mr. Grosvenor has been very active in the community as an Honorary Deputy in the San Diego Sheriff’s Association. He is also an active member of the Young Presidents Organization’s California and Colorado Chapters; the President’s Council at San Diego State University; the Lincoln Club; the San Diego Rotary; the University Club; and the San Diego Yacht Club. He serves as a Director of the Grosvenor Foundation, a private family foundation that funds other various charities.

The Universe requires an eternity . . . Thus they say that the conservation of this world is a perpetual creation and that the verbs “conserve” and “create” – so much at odds here – are synonymous in heaven.
Jorge Luis Borges

New research shows the importance of krill in balancing greenhouse gases. It was recently discovered that Antarctic krill absorb substantial amounts of carbon; when they sink they then carry it down and bury it in the deep ocean. (Newsletter SBI 2007)
