Award Presented at the Bal de la Mer,
Organized Under the Patronage of H.S.H. Prince Albert II
Monaco (July 2006) — The International SeaKeepers Society’s
2006 SeaKeeper Award was presented to legendary broadcast
journalist Mr. Walter Cronkite at the Bal de la Mer in Monaco,
recognizing his lifelong championship of the sea.
Organized under the patronage of H.S.H. Prince Albert II
of Monaco, the Bal de la Mer is the official fundraising event
of the 17th annual ShowBoats International Monaco
Rendezvous and supports marine research programs led by the
International SeaKeepers Society and the Mediterranean Science
Commission (CIESM). The evening honored Mr. Cronkite for his
outstanding contribution to the protection and enhancement
of the marine environment and was highlighted by the presentation
and acceptance of the SeaKeeper Award.
The SeaKeeper Award is given annually to an individual exhibiting
an extraordinary commitment to marine conservation. Previous
award recipients have included Mikhail Gorbachev, Jean-Michel
Cousteau, H.S.H. Prince Rainier III, James Cameron, H.R.H.
Prince Khaled, Admiral James D. Watkins (USN ret.), Dr. Sylvia
A. Earle, Sir Peter Blake (posthumously), Robert Talbot, Craig
O. McCaw, William K. Reilly and Marjorie Stoneman Douglas.
Mr. Cronkite, who served as anchorman on CBS Evening News
for 19 years, is a lifelong sailor and passionate defender
of the environment. For many years, long before environmental
issues were high on the global social and political agendas,
Mr. Cronkite used his position and reputation to educate and
inform his worldwide audience about environmental threats.
In addition to reporting regularly on environmental issues,
he produced numerous award-winning documentaries, series,
and special reports on the state of the world’s health.
Walter Cronkite is the recipient of numerous awards and honors
including America’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential
Medal of Freedom, presented to him in 1981 by President Jimmy
Carter. Mr. Cronkite’s many passages and experiences
at sea aboard his 48-foot yacht Wyntje have been
the subject of four nautical books. He recently took delivery
of a new 64-foot yacht, also named Wyntje, which
he frequently sails in his home waters of the Northeast U.S.
and the Caribbean.

The International SeaKeepers Society
Founded at the Monaco Rendezvous in 1998, the International
SeaKeepers Society was begun by a small group of yacht owners
who horrified by the deteriorating health of the waters they
had grown to know and love. Their original mission was to
develop an ocean monitoring system to collect data to provide
scientists with a clearer picture of what is happening in
the sea. In eight years its Founders have grown to a network
of international leaders representing 14 countries.
The SeaKeepers Society aims to be a global catalyst working
with governments, scientists, industry, and other marine organizations
to promote knowledge and to support sensible, achievable marine
protection and restoration initiatives. The development of
the automated SeaKeeper 1000TM ocean and meteorological monitoring
system is the first of many projects. The SK1000 is now deployed
in some 50 locations around the world, including yachts, cruise
ships, ferry boats, buoys and piers. It is endorsed by the
United Nations, the World Meteorological Organization, Scripps
Institution of Oceanography, NOAA and the U.S. National Weather
Service.
The International SeaKeepers Society is
a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, registered in the United
States. Registrations as a charitable organization in other
countries are in process.
