ALLIANCES & AFFILIATIONS

The SeaKeepers Society has increased its reach, recognition and impact by forming appropriate and beneficial alliances and affiliations with a number of environmental, scientific, and governmental and corporate entities.

CIESM - The International Commission for the Scientific Exploration of the Mediterranean Sea – a SeaKeeper 1000TM is installed on a ferry operating between Marseilles, Algiers and Tunis to study circulation, salinity and surface temperatures where Mediterranean and Atlantic waters meet.

IOC/WMO – These UN agencies have designated yachts equipped with SeaKeeper 1000 as part of the Global Oceans Observing System (GOOS).

Brazil/Metalnave – A program is devised to use SeaKeeper 1000 TM to help monitor the impact of coastal development on the oceans.

NDBC – SeaKeeper modules are tested and approved for deployment on sea buoys operated by the National Data Buoy Center of NOAA.

NOAA – A Memorandum of Understanding and Data Sharing Agreement provides that in exchange for data gathered by SeaKeepers Society member yachts. NOAA pays for the coat of satellite transmission.

NOAA/WMO/NWS – At their request, all collected weather and ocean data is submitted to GTS for global distribution to National Weather Services.

GOSUD – The Global Ocean Surface Underway Database located in Canada and France is encouraging SeaKeepers participation in their data acquisition program.

SAMOS – The Shipboard Automated Marine and Oceanographic System has invited SeaKeepers to recruit member vessels to their unique program presently focused upon two Research vessels, one from Scripps and the other from WHOI.

CSIRO – Australia’s Scientific and Industrial Research Organization inspected the SeaKeeper 1000 TM module and recommended its use as an automated Ocean and Meteorological monitoring system for eight new Australian Coast Guard cutters presently under construction.

Carnival Cruise Lines – The first cruise line to sign on as a SeaKeeper supporter, Carnival currently operates SeaKeeper 1000 TM on its ships Triumph, Spirit, Legend, and Miracle.

Royal Caribbean – A SeaKeeper 1000 TM and a complete ocean laboratory has been installed on the cruise ship Explorer of the Seas.

Holland America – A SeaKeeper 1000 TM is installed on their ship Amsterdam.

Tens of millions of sharks are killed every year to make shark fin soup, an Asian delicacy that denotes privilege and social rank. A bowl of shark fin soup can cost US$100, which makes the fins by far the most valuable part of the shark, and explain why most shark are finned and then returned to the sea to die a slow and agonizing death.
