This expedition will explore the ecology of the ocean sunfish (Mola mola) during its seasonal appearance in the waters off Cape Cod. Research efforts will involve opportunistic sampling in the summer and fall, which coincide with known periods of sunfish presence. Upon visual identification via drones, spotter planes, or tender vessels, researchers will approach, catch, and sample, and release individual sunfish. Captured animals will be briefly secured for data collection using a tail rope and body cable, with each handling session limited to 15 minutes to ensure minimal stress. A variety of datapoints will be taken from individuals, spanning questions on genetics, biochemistry, and parasitology. A select number of individuals will be tagged with satellite tags to monitor their long-range movements.
Expedition parameters listed above are flexible and negotiable.
