International Junior SeaKeepers Webinar - Megafauna Conservation

Auckland, New Zealand
July 16, 2025

Overview

On July 16th, 2025, the International SeaKeepers Society - South Pacific hosted a Junior SeaKeepers Program webinar for our students at Albany Senior High School and global cohort of students, focusing on Megafauna Conservation. We were excited to welcome Sanna from Manta Watch New Zealand, who shared her expertise on manta rays and their ecological importance both in New Zealand waters and globally.

Sanna’s engaging presentation introduced our students to the biology of manta rays, their distribution, and the vital role they play in marine ecosystems. She also addressed current knowledge gaps and highlighted the major threats these gentle giants face, including bycatch, plastic pollution, and habitat degradation. The session concluded with a fun and interactive Q&A game, where participating students had the chance to win ocean-themed prizes.

The webinar was recorded and shared with our international chapters to extend this educational opportunity beyond the live session. Presentations like this one allow Junior SeaKeepers to connect directly with marine scientists and conservationists, fostering awareness, inspiration, and a global community of ocean advocates.
