Overview
On July 14, 2025, The International SeaKeepers Society UK Chapter hosted 3 Classroom Lessons with Glenmoor and Winton Academies students as part of their Enrichment Week programme. SeaKeepers combined 2 of their novel lesson plans, Arctic Exploration and Polar Ecosystems and Climate Change in the Arctic, to provide the students with the opportunity to learn more about the Arctic environment and the threats that it faces. Created in partnership with DISCOVERY Vessel Yeva’s captain Ella Hibbert, the lessons allow students to explore this polar habitat through the eyes of an inspirational young sailor, who is currently completing a record-setting Arctic circumnavigation. The students were introduced to various marine species that have uniquely adapted to survive under current conditions, such as polar bears, ringed seals, narwhal and cold water corals, and discussed how these creatures might be affected by climate change in particular. Taking inspiration from the presentation, the students created their own infographics to highlight the importance of Arctic habitats, such as tundra, sea ice, ice sheets and the Arctic Ocean, the species that live within, and how anyone across the globe can make simple lifestyle changes to better protect and restore this threatened region.
The International SeaKeepers Society thank the staff and students at Glenmoor and Winton Academies for their warm welcome and enthusiasm to learn more about a highly threatened, yet extremely valuable, habitat - the Arctic. We look forward to collaborating with Glenmoor and Winton Academies again in the future to inspire the next generation to better protect the marine environment.
