Eyesea: Mapping Pollution to Protect the Ocean

Project Overview:

Eyesea is a global nonprofit organization with a bold mission to create the world’s largest map and database of maritime and coastal pollution. Through geotagged images, individuals and organizations can report and map pollution sources such as plastic, oil spills, and marine debris. This invaluable data helps track the composition and distribution of pollution and fuels the development of strategies for cleanup and prevention.

Background:

Eyesea’s free app allows global Citizen Scientists to map & gather visible maritime pollution data. As the true Eyes of the Ocean, seafarers can provide the truth about what is happening in our oceans. The maritime industry drives the Eyesea Initiative, and for those who work, live on, or love the ocean, the app offers a simple, safe way to contribute invaluable data.

Mission:

Eyesea partners with community groups to close the loop on waste pollution management. The platform enables real-time reporting and response to pollution, fostering collaboration among the maritime industry, governments, and grassroots organizations. Actionable insights drive faster, more effective cleanups. The goal is not just to map pollution, but to catalyze change. Through data analytics, Eyesea helps address maritime pollution, protect marine ecosystems, and unites communities for a cleaner, healthier planet.

Data Impact:

Eyesea’s data drives more effective and immediate responses to maritime pollution while also supporting education. It is being integrated into master’s programs at partner universities and introduced to schools across the Isle of Man, India, Chile, and beyond.
