Project Overview
On the morning of October 1, 2025, The International SeaKeepers Society hosted a Classroom on the Sand with 59 hardworking students and 18 educators from Surf, Skate, Science in Pompano Beach, Florida. Our Community Engagement Manager, Lillian, and our Educational Outreach Manager, Jack, met the students at Pavilion Two along the shores of Pompano Beach where after an introduction on SeaKeepers’ mission and educational efforts, we jumped right into one of our newest activities called Creatures from the Beach. In this activity, students get the chance to not only identify, but sort various marine organisms into broad as well as specific evolutionary groups, from simple plant or animal to marine mammals versus fish. Once we had sorted most of our species, we analyzed the physiology and structures of our organisms to make inferences about their closest relatives, their trophic role, and what habitats they likely occupy. Our team worked with three student groups throughout the day, and all three were nearly flawless in their species sorting! We give a massive thanks to the incredible team at Surf, Skate, Science for hosting us, and as always we look forward to working with them again very soon!
