Classroom Visit with Belen Jesuit MS Fishing Club

Classroom Visit with Belen Jesuit MS Fishing Club cover

Project Overview

On October 28, 2025, the International SeaKeepers Society visited the Fishing Club at Belen Jesuit Preparatory School for a lesson on watershed science as well as the pollution crisis as a preamble for a floating classroom later in 2025. To start the lesson, our Educational Outreach Manager, Jack, spent some time fielding a wide variety of general marine science questions from the 78 middle schoolers in attendance. After this and some brief introductions to the work SeaKeepers does, we moved right into discussing the pollution epidemic. Students took turns naming some of the major types of pollution, how they enter our waterways, and how they affect the creatures that live there. After highlighting a great deal of the major sources and negative impacts of pollution, we then moved into what we can do in our daily lives to mitigate this global crisis. Students emphasized the importance of reusable bottles, attending cleanups, and being mindful of any plastic you produce. We finished the day with a final Q&A, and the students were able to sign up for our floating classroom experience with the club later in November! We give a huge thank you to the teachers and students of Belen Jesuit for a fun and exciting conversation as always, and look forward to seeing them in November for a floating classroom!
