Project Overview

On Thursday, November 20, 2025, The International SeaKeepers Society returned to Bowman Ashe Doolin K-8 Academy to teach 74 returning second grade students about coral reefs. Our Education Outreach Manager, Jack, and Community Engagement Manager, Lillian, started off by reintroducing SeaKeepers and leading an interactive discussion into the core concepts of the rainforests of the sea. Our students were successfully able to understand the components and function of coral reefs, as well as the dangers they face and the steps they can take to protect them. Following our discussion, the students had the opportunity to test their knowledge with a combination of True or False and multiple choice questions in our trivia game called “Are you Smarter than a Brain Coral?” Individually they recalled the key concepts of corals in the forms of zooxanthellae, habitat protection, food production, and human interaction to best answer the question and become the smartest coral in the room. These students continued to surprise our team with their prior knowledge, in-depth questions, and overall eagerness to learn more about ocean ecosystems and biodiversity. We give a huge thank you to Bowman Ashe Doolin for hosting us once again and look forward to future collaborations very soon!
