- DISCOVERY Yacht Nyla
Oceanic Manta Ray Surveys and Filming with Manta Watch NZ
- November 9 - 11, 2025
- Great Barrier Island, New Zealand
Expedition Summary
From 9th to 11th of November, 2025, The International SeaKeepers Society South Pacific team facilitated a scientist-led expedition in partnership with Manta Watch New Zealand aboard the DISCOVERY Yacht Nyla. The purpose of this three-day mission was to survey for oceanic manta rays across key areas of the Hauraki Gulf and to support Manta Watch New Zealand in capturing promotional footage for their conservation and outreach efforts.
Throughout the expedition, the team covered a large portion of the Hauraki Gulf. Although no oceanic manta rays were seen, the time on the water provided useful observations and helped build a better understanding of where potential manta habitats may exist in the region.
The team also came across several boil-ups, where schools of baitfish push to the surface and attract feeding seabirds, dolphins, and sometimes whales. We were lucky enough to see all of these animals together, including multiple Bryde’s whales moving through the activity. Sightings like this show just how dynamic and productive the Hauraki Gulf is and reinforce the importance of spending time on the water to monitor the region’s marine life.
