Coral Outplanting at The Reefline

IMG 3346

Project Overview

ReefLine is designing artificial reef structures to be deployed off the coast of Miami (just like the near shore shallow Neon Reef). Miami native gorgonian octocorals will be collected from near shore reefs and fragmented to later be out-planted on the artificial reef structures.

Application

โ€œThe Miami Native Coral Lab will grow resilient corals of opportunity for transplanting onto The ReefLine sculptures and habitat modules, making it one of the largest hybrid reef projects in the world. Using urban corals that have demonstrated resistance to bleaching and disease, the Miami Native Coral Lab will amplify thousands of corals each year to rebuild reef habitat that has been lost over the decades offshore Miami Beach.โ€

Expedition Summary

On May 31st, 2026, The International SeaKeepers Society assisted Colin Foord of Coral Morphologic and The ReefLine to out-plant 69 individual coral fragments (specifically purple candelabra gorgonians) which were harvested from nearby reefs and will now grow and create new habitat for reef fish just off of Miami Beach, near Neon Reef. This was just the first of many future outings to continue out-planting corals on the ReefLine sculpture structures.

Location

Just offshore of South Beach, Miami Beach, FL

Duration of Project

This out-planting took place on May 31, 2026, but The ReefLine will remain an artificial reef structure indefinitely.
