Project Overview
Across the global oceans, sharks are becoming increasingly threatened due to both human and environmental challenges. In the Mediterranean Sea specifically, over half of shark and ray species are at risk of extinction, with open ocean sharks having experienced declines of 98-99% over the past 50-200 years. These decreases are largely driven by overfishing (targeted capture), bycatch (accidental capture) and habitat degradation. As the region remains one of the most exploited and fisheries data is often limited or inaccurate, it is imperative that we learn more about the species living within if we are to protect and conserve their populations moving forward.
Application
Mediterranean white sharks are among the least studied in the world. This expedition therefore aims to provide more information about the population as part of the wider White Shark Chase research initiative. Through shark tagging and environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis, researchers will learn more about the movement patterns and distributions of these apex predators in the Sicilian Channel – a known white shark stronghold.
By uncovering more about the presence and absence of white sharks in the region, this expedition will provide valuable evidence to show where more effective conservation strategies are needed, particularly when intense fishing and boat traffic threaten their survival.
Expedition Summary
From 20 – 31 October, 2025, The International SeaKeepers Society hosted an expedition in the Sicilian Channel aboard DISCOVERY Vessel TE STREEP to support 9 researchers from Virginia Techโs Department of Fish and Wildlife Conservation with their white shark studies, and documentarians from Blue Marine Foundation. In the Mediterranean Sea, white shark populations are highly threatened due to overfishing and habitat degradation. However, they also remain largely understudied with little known about their aggregations. White sharks play a vital role in the marine ecosystem, maintaining ecological balance through predation of weaker individuals. Improving understanding of their presence in the region is therefore key to improving their conservation status and ensuring ocean health. Over the 18 day at-sea expedition in the Sicilian Channel, the researchers had unprecedented access to the local marine environment for both shark tagging and eDNA analysis to pursue their research goals.
Although no sharks were encountered or tagged on the expedition, the team collected 45 eDNA samples from various locations across the region which will provide insight into the movement patterns and migration routes of individuals. These samples will indicate whether white sharks were present or absent in the study area, highlighting which specific aspects of the Sicilian Channel are favoured habitats and which are less frequently utilised. Future endeavours will focus on further investigations into white shark population distributions and dynamics in the region, with the aim of collating evidence to support the implementation of targeted conservation measures through international cooperation and long-term efforts.

Duration of Project
The White Shark Chase initiative was developed by Virginia Techโs Department of Fish and Wildlife Conservation researcher Francesco Ferretti. It commenced in 2024 after an expedition to locate the last remaining white shark populations in the Mediterranean Sea proved successful. The initiative aims to identify areas in the Mediterranean where white sharks are likely to be found, and establish a monitoring program to help prevent their extinction.
