Project Overview

On the morning of August 28, 2026, The International SeaKeepers Society hosted a classroom visit with 88 students and 10 educators from the Alexander Montessori School in Cutler Bay, Florida. These students attended summer camp at the school, where they worked with educators and guest lecturers to learn all about marine conservation and many other topics. Our Educational Outreach Manager, Jack, visited the school to lead an interactive presentation centered on coastal habitats with emphasis on the major types seen in South Florida: mangroves, coral reefs, and seagrass meadows. Despite the students being on the younger side, they were quick learners and shared some great facts and questions about these critical ecosystems. After our presentation, we moved onto a second activity to discuss and learn more about the life in these habitats through our marine life identification game called Creatures from the Beach. In this activity, we split the students into partnered pairs and handed each a photo of a marine organism, and one by one worked as a group to share what creatures everyone had, and which might be related to each other. By the end of the day, our students were animal identification and physiology experts, able to pinpoint features of distinguishing mammals, fish, crustaceans, and many more. We give a huge thank you to the hardworking students and educators of Alexander Montessori School, and we look forward to working with them again very soon!
