Project Overview
On 25 September, SeaKeepers South Pacific took learning out onto the water with four students in Whitianga for a memorable Floating Classroom experience aboard the Glass Bottom Boat Whitianga.
The students had the opportunity to explore the marine environment firsthand, observing the incredible marine life beneath the surface. From spotting a variety of fish to an exciting encounter with a seal, the trip offered a wonderful insight into the biodiversity of our coastal waters.
One of the highlights was comparing marine environments inside and outside the marine reserve. By observing the differences between these areas, students gained a better understanding of the importance of marine protection and how marine reserves can help support healthy ocean ecosystems.
The students also stepped into the role of marine scientists for the day, carrying out water quality testing and learning how scientists monitor the health of our oceans. Through hands-on activities, they discovered how collecting and understanding environmental data helps us care for and protect our marine environment.
It was a fantastic day of discovery, curiosity, and connection with the ocean. Experiences like these are at the heart of SeaKeepers South Pacific’s Floating Classroom programme, inspiring the next generation of ocean stewards through real-world marine education.
A huge thank you to Glass Bottom Boat Whitianga for helping make this special learning experience possible!
