Reverse Tashlich Cleanup 2026

On Sunday, September 6, 2026, The International SeaKeepers Society partnered with the Miami Jewish community for Reverse Tashlich 2026. SeaKeepers co-hosted the event with Repair the World, Repair the Sea, and Temple Beth Sholom, alongside partners Hillel at FIU, Hillel at University of Miami, The Tribe, Temple Beth Am, and Center for Jewish Life at Beth David. Reverse Tashlich mobilizes communities to clean waterways and remove plastic pollution through Jewish environmental action, education, and hands-on stewardship inspired by the ritual of Tashlich. We were joined by 75 volunteers at Historic Virginia Key Beach Park, where they participated in some Jewish learning followed by an instructional and safety briefing led by SeaKeepers. Once adjourned, volunteers grabbed gloves, pickers, buckets, and mesh bags to head out into the park in search of trash. Historic Virginia Key Beach Park features a mile of shoreline, dense mangroves, and multiple pavilions and picnic areas, where people congregate and enjoy themselves, often leaving debris behind. The volunteers spread out throughout the whole park to remove trash that could endanger the local marine life, and quickly started returning with buckets and bags filled with debris of all types. Several volunteers used the app Marine Debris Tracker to collect data during the cleanup, informing us that plastic fragments, bottle caps, and food wrappers were the most commonly collected types of trash. By the end of the cleanup, the group had collected more than 103 pounds of trash from the park, with the majority of it coming from the mangroves, dunes, and picnic areas. We are so proud of all the work the volunteers put in to keep the park clean, and so grateful to our partner organizations for welcoming us to partner for this event once again. We are looking forward to joining Repair the World, Repair the Sea and Temple Beth Sholom for Reverse Tashlich 2027!
