Project Overview

On June 8, 2022, SeaKeepers celebrated “World Oceans Day,” a holiday that honors the life-sustaining force that the ocean is for humanity and reflects on how our lifestyles affect its health. This year we kicked off our World Ocean Day festivities by hosting a beach cleanup in collaboration with 1 Hotel South Beach on 24th Street beach. 1 Hotel’s operations align with our journey toward cleaner oceans by participating in recycling, composting, offering their guests sustainable options, and through architecture that blends with the surroundings of the coastal ecosystems surrounding it. Among other sustainable methods, 1 Hotel is actively pursuing its mission of fighting the climate crisis and facilitating guests’ connections to nature.

Forty-eight volunteers participated, which included community members and 1 Hotel faculty and staff, who came out in the evening to collect 92 pounds of trash from the sands and dunes of South Beach. Among the cigarette butts, bottle caps, and large amounts of discarded plastic water bottles from beachgoers, volunteers also found an iPad still in working condition. The iPad was left with hotel staff in hopes of finding the owner.

Thank you to 1 Hotel South Beach for collaborating with us to clean, and for providing an example to the industry of eco-friendly and sustainable operations.
