Project Overview
Bridging Science, Conservation and Communication
The IJSKP 2026 webinar curriculum, developed in collaboration with SeaKeepers and its scientific partners, provided participants with direct access to the work, expertise, and real-world experiences of leading marine conservation organisations and scientists. Through these sessions, students gained exposure not only to scientific knowledge, but also to the practical challenges, field research, and communication strategies that shape contemporary ocean conservation efforts.
The series opened on 27 January 2026 with Webinar 1: Science Communication by Hayley Davis from The International SeaKeepers Society. Hayley emphasised the importance of scientists becoming effective communicators, sharing insights on selecting the right communication platforms, ethical storytelling, and practical tips for engaging diverse audiences. The session highlighted how science communication plays a critical role in translating research into public awareness and action.
On 5 February 2026, Webinar 2: Coral Reef Conservation with the Great Reef Census featured Sophie Kalkowski-Pope from Citizens of the Reef. Students learnt about the Great Reef Census, a pioneering citizen science initiative combining underwater photography and artificial intelligence to monitor the vast Great Barrier Reef. Participants were also enlisted as citizen scientists to assist with coral image analysis, giving them direct involvement in marine conservation research.
During Webinar 6 on 7 April 2026, Sanaa Nair from Manta Watch Aotearoa shared insights into manta ray research and fieldwork in New Zealand. Her presentation explored migration patterns, reproduction, threats to manta populations, and long-term data collection efforts, providing students with valuable perspectives from ongoing marine research and conservation initiatives in the region.
