International Junior SeaKeepers Explore the Future of Coral Reef Science at ICRS 2026

On July 22nd, The International SeaKeepers Society was proud to provide our International Junior SeaKeepers (IJSK) students with the opportunity to attend the 16th International Coral Reef Symposium (ICRS 2026) in Auckland, New Zealand. Held every four years, ICRS is the world’s largest coral reef science conference, bringing together more than 1,200 scientists, conservation practitioners, educators, and industry leaders from around the globe to share the latest research and innovations in coral reef conservation.

For our students, attending the symposium was an inspiring introduction to the global coral reef community. One of the highlights was exploring the poster sessions, where they engaged directly with researchers presenting cutting-edge science. The students asked thoughtful questions, discussed ongoing projects, and gained valuable insight into how scientific research is conducted and shared.

Beyond the scientific presentations, the exhibition hall offered an exciting opportunity to connect with organizations and technology leaders working to protect our oceans. Students visited booths hosted by organizations such as CoralWatch and James Cook University, where they learned about coral monitoring programs, citizen science initiatives, and educational opportunities. They also discovered emerging marine technologies, including remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs), and explored how these tools are transforming coral reef research, monitoring, and conservation.

Experiences like these are invaluable for the next generation of ocean stewards. By interacting with world-renowned scientists, conservation organizations, and innovative technologies, our International Junior SeaKeepers gained a deeper understanding of the collaborative effort required to protect coral reef ecosystems. The symposium not only expanded their knowledge but also inspired them to continue pursuing careers and opportunities in marine science and conservation.
