Project Overview
The final gathering of the 2026 International Junior SeaKeepers programme, held on 30 May, was celebrated with a special Junior SeaKeepers Keychain Upcycling Workshop aboard the DISCOVERY Yacht Legend.
In recognition of their outstanding achievements, the top three teams for their science communication project presentations, together with two exceptional students, were invited to take part in this unique experience.
A total of 15 Junior SeaKeepers participated in the workshop, where they explored the environmental impacts of neoprene wetsuit waste on marine ecosystems and human health, while learning about innovative recycling solutions for neoprene and other textile materials.
Guided by three facilitators from Wayve, the students were introduced to both hand-sewing and machine-sewing techniques. Using reclaimed end-of-life wetsuits, each participant crafted a unique key charm inspired by the knobbly sea star (Protoreaster nodosus).
Blending creativity with environmental action, the workshop offered an enriching hands-on experience that deepened participantsโ understanding of sustainability, responsible consumption, and the circular economy. By transforming discarded materials into meaningful keepsakes, the students not only developed new practical skills but also celebrated the dedication, teamwork, and curiosity they had demonstrated throughout the programme.
