Floating Classrooms

Through the DISCOVERY Program, SeaKeepers partners with vessel owners to transform boats into Floating Classrooms, bringing marine science to life for students. Our program connects school groups with expert marine educators for hands-on learning experiences in local waters, covering marine conservation, ecosystem health, and ocean stewardship.

For Teachers & Parents: Give your students an unforgettable, STEM-aligned field trip that inspires a love for the ocean.

For Marine Educators: Expand your impact by leading interactive lessons aboard our vessels.

In addition to scientific expeditions, SeaKeepers organizes ocean education programs for K-12 students and teachers. The programming includes marine biology field trips in addition to classroom-based and online lessons. The programs are designed to develop awareness and appreciation for the fragile marine environment and inspire a lifelong passion for ocean conservation in today’s youth. K-12 educators can access these resources free of charge.

Included are lesson plans, marine science kits, and presentations by experts in the field. SeaKeepers also provides classrooms, both on land and at sea aboard our DISCOVERY Fleet. These private vessels, provided by generous SeaKeepers members, are floating classrooms where students and teachers have the opportunity for hands-on experience. For those unable to travel, virtual experiences are available in real time through remote digital technology.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is The International SeaKeepers Society?

SeaKeepers is a global registered not-for-profit organization dedicated to ocean conservation. Our initiatives rely on the energy and generosity of people around the world who share our concern for the health of the oceans and, by extension, the survival of our planet.

Our core initiative is the DISCOVERY Program, which facilitates marine research and ocean education through partnerships with the boating and academic communities. We coordinate scientific and educational expeditions through the generosity of vessel owners willing to contribute their time and expertise.

SeaKeepers runs land-based and floating ocean education classrooms for K-12 students in addition to professional development workshops for educators focusing on marine biology, conservation, and ocean stewardship.

The Junior SeaKeepers Program introduces high school students to marine science and ocean conservation through educational workshops, service hours, and scholarships.

This is an educational program conducted aboard a DISCOVERY Fleet vessel, where students engage in hands-on learning about marine science, oceanography, and conservation. The vessel serves as the classroom, allowing direct interaction with marine environments for experiential ocean education.

SeaKeepers’ designed the programs to provide the opportunity for young learners to engage with marine education without any financial barriers. The programs are therefore free of charge and accessible to all K-12 educators and students.

This is possible through partnerships with marine educators and other nonprofits to provide enriching experiences and a high-quality educational environment.

SeaKeepers also has a corporate sponsorship program that helps support our initiatives and outreach efforts.

If you are interested in working with SeaKeepers to create a marine conservation experience for your classroom, please contact our programming team directly at programming@seakeepers.org.

Our programs rely on our DISCOVERY Fleet vessels for floating classrooms. The DISCOVERY Program accepts vessels of all sizes. Fill out this form to become a member and see which opportunities match your vessel and your interests.
