Project Overview

The SeaKeepers South Pacific Chapter launched the Ocean Youth Programme as a new initiative designed to connect young people with the ocean through hands-on learning, real-world experiences, and meaningful environmental engagement. Through this programme, marine education is delivered directly into schools via interactive sessions focused on ocean science, conservation, and sustainability, sparking curiosity while deepening students’ understanding of marine ecosystems and the challenges they face.

The pilot programme is currently underway at Albany Senior High School, where students are integrating the initiative into their Impact Projects. In collaboration with Blue Nature Aotearoa, the programme is further supported through aligned ocean-focused learning opportunities that enhance both curriculum engagement and practical understanding.

The programme’s first expedition took place on 11 February at the New Zealand Maritime Museum, providing students with an introduction to New Zealand’s maritime history and its enduring connection to the ocean, and establishing a strong foundation for future learning and exploration.

The SeaKeepers Ocean Youth Programme reflects a commitment to in-person, experiential education—fostering meaningful connections, creating lasting learning experiences, and encouraging students to take an active role in ocean stewardship. As the programme develops, there are plans to expand to additional schools, continuing to support and inspire the next generation of ocean advocates.
