Project Overview
On February 9, 2026, The International SeaKeepers Society hosted a virtual lesson with 10 students and 2 educators of the Marine Science Club from Broward College. Our team was invited to join and talk about apex predators by one of our current 2025-26 JSKs, Melanie Gonzalez, who we are immensely proud of for founding this club and were extremely excited to speak with her and her fellow club members! The SeaKeepers Education team took turns discussing some key topics including physiology, food webs, fisheries, and the study of apex predators to include some key traits of marine apex predators like sharks and orcas. The students asked some fantastic questions and made some great inferences about the roles of certain animals in their ecosystem based on key physiological differences, such as larger fins and a streamlined body form likely meaning an animal was a high-ranking predator. We concluded our presentation with a discussion on how scientists study these amazing animals and why it is so important, as well as what we can all do to better protect them in the wild. We had a great time speaking and learning with the hardworking students of the Marine Science Club, and give a huge thanks to Melanie for putting this club together in her community as well as inviting us to work with them!
