Overview

On August 2, 2022, The International SeaKeepers Society partnered with the Watersports Association to host 20 young adults from Casa Valentina. With Biscayne Bay as their classroom, participants discussed the current threats to the Bay, learned about how each individual can make an impact with their own choices, and asked questions about how to improve ecosystem health. Participants then explored Pelican Island and removed over 107 pounds of trash from the area, noting items that they use in their daily lives.

Outing Goal

Casa Valentina is a transitional living space where young adults who have aged out of the foster care system or are currently homeless can live affordably. The organization offers mentorship and educational opportunities to residents to help them achieve their goals and move successfully into their next life chapter. The purpose of this outing is to expose young adults with limited resources to real science that supports the goals of ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns, empower them to take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts, and teach how the oceans, seas, and marine resources can be conserved and sustainably used for development.
