Inaugural Teacher Workshop in Collaboration with Georgia Aquarium

Overview

From June 27th to June 30th, 2022, The International SeaKeepers Society (SeaKeepers) partnered with the Georgia Aquarium to host ten high school teachers from Georgia for a teacher workshop in Miami. The teachers learned about pollution sources and impacts on Biscayne Bay and considered ways to integrate marine ecosystems into their curricula. The teachers saw dolphins on Biscayne Bay, snorkeled around coral reefs, and learned how the everyday actions of humans can impact these delicate ecosystems. The teachers were also given Earth Echo water quality test kits to use in their own classrooms, as well as Stream2Sea sunscreen and other reusable items to help reduce their plastic waste.

Outing Goal

On average, teachers may work with 4,000 students over the course of their careers. By bringing teachers out on the water, the goal of our collaboration was to inspire them to keep learning and help them find new ways to invigorate their classrooms. Moving forward, our teachers will return to their schools with new tools, resources, and ideas to help students better understand the threats to our planet, and what we can do to conserve it.
