Photogrammetric Survey and Biodiversity Assessment of the NOVA Reef Piles
Coral Gables, Florida
April 12, 2025
Program Overview
On April 12 2025, DISCOVERY Vessel Aventura departed from Miami as part of an ongoing initiative to support marine research through collaborative expeditions. This mission focused on documenting artificial reef systems off the coast of Miami-Dade County, Florida, with the goal of generating 3D spatial models and collecting biological samples. The research team partnered with the Miami Native Coral Lab to explore the ecological function and resilience of native coral species within artificial reef environments.
Application
The data and specimens collected during this expedition will enhance scientific understanding of artificial reef development, marine biodiversity, and coral adaptation in South Florida’s coastal ecosystems. The resulting 3D models will facilitate future assessments of reef growth and habitat complexity, while the coral specimens will inform ongoing research into species resilience under changing ocean conditions. This work not only supports ecological research but also contributes to public education and marine conservation through outreach initiatives and accessible spatial data.
Expedition Summary
On April 12th, 2025, Aventura embarked on an expedition to the NOVA artificial reef site, equipped with GoPro cameras and scientific collection tools. Each day, divers conducted photogrammetric surveys of the reef piles, capturing high-resolution imagery to support the development of detailed 3D models. These models will serve as baselines for long-term monitoring and ecological evaluation.
In parallel, the team collected gorgonian soft coral specimens under an active scientific collection license. These samples are part of a research project led by Isabelle at the Miami Native Coral Lab, investigating the biological traits, ecological roles, and adaptive capacity of gorgonian species colonizing artificial substrates.
