Overview

Over the two days of May 26th and May 27th, SeaKeepers’ Asia Educational Programme Planner, Marla Lise, had the pleasure of running Climate Fresk workshops with students from the Singapore Chinese Girls’ School (SCGS). Fifteen girls joined the first session, and nineteen the next - 34 bright, curious minds ready to make sense of a complex, changing world.
The Climate Fresk proved to be a powerful tool for helping students understand how human activities, climate change, and the ocean are deeply interconnected. This gamified, collaborative card game is visual, interactive, and grounded in science, drawing directly from IPCC reports. Through cause-and-effect mapping, group dialogue, and a touch of storytelling and creativity, students began to see how everything really leads back to us.
The students explored systems thinking, the ripple effects of daily choices, and the transformative power of awareness. The three-hour session unfolded like a story: human activity is where it begins, and the consequences to our lives and ecosystems are where it could end. However, it also offered a message of hope, reminding us that we still have the chance to rewrite the ending.
The students were particularly struck by the widespread and interconnected impacts of climate change, realising it extends far beyond individual species like polar bears. One student reflected, “I think armed conflict has an everlasting effect on countries, but physical or mental conflicts in general can be really sad and negative for people. We should make friends, not enemies.” They also came to understand that everyone’s actions matter in the fight against climate change. Another student noted, “The burning of fossil fuels is rapidly increasing and it’s a concerning factor. I will put in more effort to reduce my carbon footprint.”
SeaKeepers Asia continues to support ocean and climate education across the region. Workshops like this aren’t just one-off events - they’re seeds. And with young minds learning early that they have a part to play in this unfolding story, we can’t wait to see what they grow into.
