Overview

On a bright and purposeful 3 June, nine educators from Valour Primary School, accompanied by Dr Toh Tai Chong , facilitator from the National University of Singapore (NUS), embarked on a unique journey aboard the DISCOVERY Yacht GYPSEA. Departing from ONE°15 Marina, the group sailed through some of Singapore’s most storied southern islands, including Big Sister’s Island within the Sisters’ Islands Marine Park, Lazarus Island, St John’s Island, and Kusu Island — as part of an immersive experience.
The aim of the trip was more than scenic exploration; it was a voyage of learning and inspiration. Designed to help teachers understand the outdoor and sustainability-related educational potential of these islands, the programme was part of SeaKeepers’ ongoing commitment to support marine awareness through real-world experiences. The southern islands, rich in biodiversity and layered with cultural and historical significance, serve as ideal outdoor classrooms for future student programmes.
Throughout the day, the teachers observed firsthand the efforts being made by various organisations and volunteers to restore marine habitats and raise awareness about environmental sustainability. With expert facilitation by Dr. Toh, the group delved deep into issues surrounding coral reef protection, marine biodiversity, and Singapore’s broader sustainability goals. The flexibility of the yacht’s itinerary allowed for meaningful discussions and opportunities to consider how each island could support different learning objectives, from geography and ecology to social studies and career exposure.

Reflections from Participants

  • “Thank you. Today, it allowed 9 educators to be more educated, and from there, I believe even more students will benefit.”
  • “Interesting how much has been done and how various organisations and volunteers come together to push for sustainability and marine life growth. It’ll be great exposure in a small group setting with potential for collaboration with volunteers.”
  • “I am grateful to SeaKeepers for providing us with the opportunity to experience the islands, and to glean important information about marine conservation, nature, and the social heritage of the islands. This also gave me insights into the increasingly diverse pathways that our students can explore in the marine or maritime industries.”
  • “Thank you for your generosity in supporting education about the protection of marine life and island heritage. I now have more information to share with students interested in working with the sea or sea creatures.”
  • “It’s fantastic that people volunteer their time and effort. I’ve learnt a lot about how committed Singapore is to preserving coral reefs.”
  • “The southern islands offer rich opportunities for learning — geographical, historical, environmental, and sustainable development. It gave us a new perspective of our country. SeaKeepers made the experience smooth and enriching. The flexible schedule and inter-island ferrying helped us thoroughly understand what each location can offer. Dr. Toh’s facilitation was insightful, sparking new ideas around marine conservation, safety, and education.”
  • “Many thanks to the facilitator, captain, and crew for making this a safe and successful trip!”
  • “Thank you for volunteering and putting in the effort for education.”

This outreach journey was a reminder that learning doesn't always take place within four walls — sometimes, it begins with a boat ride, an open mind, and a shared mission to protect the waters we call home.
