Beach Cleanup with Fill A Bag
January 2020

On January 12th, 2020, SeaKeepers partnered with Fill A Bag for a beach cleanup on Key Biscayne. Fill A Bag is an organization that empowers people to turn daily walks into meaningful beach cleanups. They install Fill A Bag stations at public beaches that provide beachgoers with on-demand reusable bags and repurposed buckets to fill with trash during their strolls. They provided 60 of their reusable buckets for the volunteers to use at the cleanup. 72 volunteers attended and removed 188 pounds of trash from the beach! The garbage found was comprised of cigarette butts, straws, foam pieces, plastic bottle caps, food wrappers, plastic bottles, and aluminum cans. The cleanup findings were documented on The Ocean Conservancy’s application “Clean Swell” where it then goes into the world’s largest ocean trash dataset. The data helps researchers and policy makers identify trends and create solutions. With this cleanup, SeaKeepers has officially removed 1,200 pounds of trash from this beach since June! We look forward to expanding our partnerships with local schools and businesses to conserve our local beaches and waters. Thank you to all of our volunteers and to Fill A Bag for providing the buckets for our trash collection!
