Citizen Science Training with the National Oceanography Centre
Poole Quay Boat Haven
Port of Poole, UK
November 10 2023
Purpose of Research
The Neuston Net Research Collective is a SeaKeepers' Citizen Science initiative equipping the private boating sector with marine nets to collect widespread samples for our partnered scientists.
Program Overview
On Nov 10th, 2023, SeaKeepers joined researchers from the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) at Poole Quay Boat Haven and Port of Poole to create the framework for a new SeaKeepers Citizen Science research project focusing on marine microplastic sampling and analysis. Poole is the second largest natural harbour in the world, and it was wonderful to have the support of Marina Manager Kerry Gray and Assistant Manager Tom Killick who provided the research vessel for the day. NOC is the UK leader in ocean research, technological innovation and education and this microplastic research group will tackle some of the crucial questions around microplastics in the ocean, including their fate, distribution in the ocean, and their ecological effects. The SeaKeepers DISCOVERY Yacht program hopes to provide access to regions, samples and data that these researchers would not otherwise be able to obtain. We are excited to work with Dr. Alice Horton and leading researchers from NOC and would like to thank team at Poole Quay Boat Haven for ensuring the day was not only productive, but also a lot of fun.
