First International Junior SeaKeepers Workshop and Webinar
Auckland, New Zealand
June 11, 2025
Overview
We’re thrilled to announce that on the 11th of June, the International Junior SeaKeepers Program has officially launched with its very first workshop and webinar!
The session focused on the scientific method, led by Alessandra Vallim, our South Pacific Program Assistant. Alex is currently pursuing her PhD and has several publications to her name, making her the perfect guide to walk our students through the foundational steps of scientific inquiry. Held at Albany Senior High School, the workshop was also recorded so other chapters can benefit from it. After Alessandra’s engaging presentation, students participated in a hands-on activity where they designed their own experiments using information provided, putting the scientific method into practice right away!
Next up, students tuned in for an exciting webinar from the Great Reef Census, from Citizens of the reef, presented by Nicole Senn, Engagement Manager. Nicole explained the importance of citizen science in protecting the Great Barrier Reef, and how the project powered by cutting-edge AI and supported by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority’s Eye on the Reef program is helping scientists monitor coral health and fight coral bleaching.
Students were so inspired they immediately began analysing reef images to help identify key areas for conservation. A huge thank you to our presenters and our incredible students for diving in with such enthusiasm. Here’s to a powerful start to many more workshops to come!
