Global STEM Career Day at Miami Central Senior High School
Miami, Florida
May 30, 2024
Overview
On May 30th, 2024, The International SeaKeepers Society attended the Global STEM Career Day at Miami Central Senior High School, hosted by the Global STEM Academy, a 501(c)(3) in Miami, FL, to speak with students about careers in the marine biology field and promote the Junior SeaKeepers Program. An estimated 1,100 students attended the career fair where representatives from over two-dozen organizations tabled to inspire students about their future careers. Citizen Science Manager, Haley Davis, and Science Liaison, Katie Sheahan, answered the students' many questions about how to become a marine biologist, the different careers within the field such as research, education, and communication, and how they can get involved with hands-on opportunities. Many of the students showed great interest in the Junior SeaKeepers Program, and we look forward to working with a dedicated group of future marine scientists this summer.
Outing Goal
By attending events like FMSEA’s annual educator conference, our education department is able to stay in touch with current South Florida marine science education strategies, challenges, and partnerships. In doing so, we hope to maximize our collective impact in marine conservation education and outreach for students and educators locally, but also globally. We are proud members of the Florida Marine Science Educators Association and we look forward to attending next year’s conference!
