International Coastal Cleanup Day
Morningside Park
September 18, 2021

On Saturday, September 18th, it was International Coastal Cleanup Day - Ocean Conservancy’s annual mega-cleanup that involves over 500,000 volunteers across 91 countries in a push for healthier oceans. We were so fortunate to have 107 of those volunteers at our very own Morningside Park, as we participated in Miami-Dade’s ICC initiative of over 45 cleanups across the county. From 9am until noon, volunteers collected across land, water, and barrier island to amass 330 pounds of trash from the park - a record amount of trash cleaned up from this location!

We had a wonderful time cleaning up our coast on this special ocean holiday, and to make this day even more special, our friend Runcie Tatnall donated a gorgeous coastal painting that was won in a raffle by one of our other volunteers, Michael. Congratulations Michael, we hope you enjoy the painting and that we see you again in future cleanups! Volunteers who collected the most bottle caps also won reusable Hydroflask cups and straws, and overall we collected a total of 899 plastic bottle caps. Not every day is International Coastal Cleanup Day - but it doesn’t have to be. Keep cleaning, and we will see you all at the next beach cleanup!
