International Junior SeaKeepers Launch with Albany Senior High School
Auckland, New Zealand
May 21, 2025
Overview
On May 21, 2025, The International SeaKeepers Society South Pacific proudly launched the International Junior SeaKeepers Program (IJSK) with a cohort of 10 enthusiastic students from Albany Senior High School. This launch was part of a coordinated global effort, with the UK and Asia chapters also introducing their own Junior SeaKeepers cohorts during the same week, marking a significant milestone in the program's international expansion.
The event took place on the school’s campus, where we were warmly welcomed by both students and staff. The morning began with introductions, giving us a chance to connect with the students and learn more about their interests, aspirations, and shared commitment to protecting the ocean. This passionate group brings a wide range of talents and perspectives to the program, and we are excited to support them as they begin their journey as future ocean stewards.
SeaKeepers provided an overview of the IJSK initiative, outlining the international communication, networking opportunities, and professional development workshops that will support the students throughout the year. We were also joined by Toni Lohroff, Director of Education and Outreach, who offered additional insight and encouragement to the students as they prepare to begin their science communication projects.
The session concluded with a powerful round of reflections, where students shared their motivations for joining the Junior SeaKeepers and how their unique interests will shape the projects they’ll develop and share with both local and global audiences.
The International SeaKeepers Society South Pacific extends its heartfelt thanks to Albany Senior High School for their warm hospitality and enthusiastic support. We look forward to witnessing the creativity, leadership, and passion these students will bring to the future of ocean conservation.
