International Junior SeaKeepers Workshop - Science Communication
Witley, UK
July 2, 2025
Overview
On July 2, 2025, The International SeaKeepers Society UK Chapter hosted the second workshop in the International Junior SeaKeepers Programme, which focused on Science Communication. This session was led by SeaKeepers’ Science Liaison, Katie Sheahan, who introduced the group from King Edward’s Witley to the importance of converting complex science into communicable topics to engage the public in marine conservation. By highlighting a variety of science communication techniques, such as using imagery over written text, podcasts, documentaries, presentations and infographics, Katie encouraged the students to think about how they best understand complex science outside of the classroom. Katie further stressed the importance of considering your audience when attempting to convey scientific messages to a specific non-academic audience, in order to make the key topics accessible to all. The students gained an appreciation for the field of science communication and were actively engaged in the session, sharing their knowledge and asking questions to enhance their learning.
The International SeaKeepers Society thanks Katie Sheahan for her time and support of the International Junior SeaKeepers Programme, which aims to develop the next generation of ocean advocates. This workshop was recorded and shared with our international cohort of students to extend the educational opportunity beyond the live session. Presentations like this one allow Junior SeaKeepers to connect directly with marine scientists and conservationists, fostering awareness, inspiration, and a global community of ocean advocates.
