Overview
On Friday, March 25, 2022, SeaKeepers hosted faculty and staff from Belen Jesuit Preparatory School on their annual faculty and staff day of service. Seventeen faculty and staff members boarded DISCOVERY Vessel River Queen which brought us over to Pelican Island for a cleanup. Spring break had a large impact on the island, which was littered with cups, plates, glass bottles, and tons of small pieces of plastic.
The teachers used the Clean Swell app to track over 1,200 pieces of debris removed from the site, which weighed 109 lbs in total. We hope that each teacher involved in the cleanup will share their experiences with their students and friends, moving one step closer to reducing plastic waste on a larger scale.
