December 2021

Overview

In December 2021, students in the Junior SeaKeepers Program at Cushman School listened to a webinar focused on the health of Biscayne Bay, delivered by University of Miami Masters student Charles Groppe.

Students learned about the changes in water quality that led up to and followed the fish kills that occurred in Biscayne Bay in 2020 and 2021. Charles' research uncovered unexpected trends that may indicate the cause of the these fish kills, and students learned the importance of monitoring our local ecosystems in order to keep them healthy.

The Junior SeaKeepers Program is a 6-month training program for high school students interested in marine science, research, and conservation. To learn more about the Junior SeaKeepers Program and how to apply for the 2022-2023 cycle, contact [email protected].
