SeaKeepers kicked off 2021 with a full weekend of cleanups at Hobie Beach on Virginia Key! On the 9th, 52 volunteers including Miami-Dade Young Democrats and Coral Gables National Honor Society students tackled the north side of Hobie Beach (across from the marine stadium) and collected 133 lbs of trash! They found debris from New Years celebrations including plastic champagne flutes and alcohol bottles (some empty, some unopened), and plenty of small plastic pieces and other objects as well. All the trash was removed, and volunteers logged their findings through Clean Swell, an app developed by the Ocean Conservancy to track marine debris. We also debuted our new buckets, donated by Ocaquatics, making it easier for us to reduce our plastic usage during cleanup events. As a result, only 6 plastic bags were used for this cleanup!
