Ocean Decade Conference

Overview

The 2024 Ocean Decade Conference took place from 10-12 April 2024. This event was hosted by Spain and co-organized with UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC/UNESCO) in its role as the coordinating agency of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030). SeaKeepers global team attended a series of satellite events which focused on building the Ocean Decade roadmap to 2030 and to take stock of the achievements of the first three years of the Ocean Decade and formulate a shared vision for the years ahead. "Widening Opportunities for Ocean Exploration in the Decade" was hosted at the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park. Presentations were made by Carlos Duarte (KAUST), Josep Gasol (Institut de Ciencies del Mar), and Eric King (Pink Flamingo Society). The Panel Discussion was fascinating with Eva Ramirez-Llodra (RevOcean), Martin Visbeck (KAUST), Josep Gasol (Institut de Ciencies del Mar) and Jyotika Virmani, PhD, FRMetS (Schmidt Ocean Institute). The panel moderated by Romain Troublé (Tara Oceans Foundation). It was a dynamic evening in keeping with the principles of the Ocean Decade, to be transformative and leave no one behind. The team also attended the official UN Ocean Decade Conference World Ocean Council Satellite Event focused on scaling up industry participation across all sectors in the collection of ocean, weather and climate data - which is the mission of the WOC (SO-SI) programme. The workshop was entitled “Science/Industry Partnerships for Data Collection and Sharing (SMART Ocean – SMART Industries)” The session expanded the collaboration between industry, the science community and other key stakeholders in advancing voluntary observations by the private sector and featured Swire Shipping, Fugro, Ponant, Central and Northern California Ocean Observing System (CeNCOOS).

Outing Goal

The International SeaKeepers Society attended the 2024 Ocean Decade Conference satellite events to gather relevant information and updates about the Ocean Decade achievements and strategy, while sharing our mission of oceanographic research, conservation and education with members of the ocean community.
