Overview

With marine ecosystems facing increasing threats, the Research Interest Group (RIG) REEFS at Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) launched the REEFS 2024 Marine Education & Awareness Program to promote conservation efforts. Led by Associate Professor Dr. Tan Chun Hong, the initiative took place at the Terengganu Science and Creativity Centre in Malaysia .

Collaboration played a crucial role in the program’s success, with key support from The International SeaKeepers Society, Aquawalk Sdn Bhd, and the Kapas Conservation Society. These organizations, alongside UMT, worked together to create an engaging and impactful experience that combined education, awareness, and hands-on activities to focus on educating the public—particularly students—about the vital role of marine ecosystems in environmental sustainability.

A total of 130 students from 14 schools across Terengganu took part in interactive sessions designed to enhance their understanding of marine conservation. One standout activity, the "Waste to Wealth" competition, challenged students to repurpose discarded materials into innovative products, creatively promoting sustainability. Additionally, outdoor activities fostered environmental appreciation while strengthening community ties.

The program also addressed the urgent threats facing coral reefs in Malaysia. Research from UMT indicates that live coral cover is declining by approximately 1 per cent annually, while recent mass bleaching events have led to losses of up to 50 per cent in Terengganu’s waters. Rising ocean temperatures, pollution from plastics and chemicals, and increasing ocean acidification are all major contributors to this crisis.

The participation of UMT’s Marine Biology students further demonstrated the university’s dedication to fostering future leaders in marine conservation. Their involvement showcased the importance of hands-on education and community-driven action in preserving the ocean’s delicate ecosystems.

By uniting academia, industry, and environmental organizations, REEFS 2024 reinforced the power of collaboration in tackling marine conservation challenges. With continued efforts and shared responsibility, initiatives like this can help safeguard Malaysia’s marine heritage for generations to come.
