SeaKeepers at the Shenandoah Middle School Career Day

Overview

On the morning of February 27th, 2025, the International SeaKeepers Society attended a Career Day Fair at Shenandoah Middle School in Coral Gables, Florida. Our Community Engagement Associate, Lillian, and our Educational Outreach Associate, Jack, set up a table along with various other organizations ranging from volunteer groups to local colleges. Throughout the day, our team engaged with more than 200 middle school students on what SeaKeepers stands for, how to get involved with volunteer opportunities like cleanups and the Junior SeaKeepers program, answered questions about our experiences in marine biology, and led a short lesson with each group of students on the plastic pollution crisis and how plastics affect coral reefs by showing off samples of collected plastics as well as coral skeletons. The students showed a natural affinity for marine science, answering many of our questions easily and participating in several interactive activities we had at our table such as ocean trivia Jenga! We are extremely grateful to the faculty of Shenandoah Middle School for hosting us as well as the students for their great questions and participation, and we hope to work together and see the students at future SeaKeepers events soon.
