SeaKeepers Continuing Education - HeartSaver Workshop

Miami, Florida

Overview

On May 7th, 2024, The International SeaKeepers Society's headquarters staff participated in a continuing education opportunity organized by SeaKeepers Education Manager, Toni Lohroff. For this continuing education workshop, the SeaKeepers team traveled to Miami Yacht Club where they were hosted by the founder of the non-profit Every Second Counts CPR, Ed Kosiec, for cardiac emergency response training for bystanders.

Every Second Counts CPR is a South Florida-based 501 (c) 3 Non-Profit that is dedicated to increasing cardiac arrest survival rates by providing educational programs for organizations and individuals. For this HeartSaver workshop, Ed worked with the SeaKeepers team on training for several different emergency response scenarios including cardiac arrest and choking in infants, children, and adults, as well as how the correct response to those situations can significantly improve the chances of survival for a victim of emergency before first responders arrive. The SeaKeepers' team was shocked to learn through this workshop that a cardiac arrest victim's chances of survival decrease by up to 10% for every minute that bystander CPR is not performed before emergency services arrive.

Outing Goal

This continuing education opportunity is vital to groups like the staff at SeaKeepers given our work intersects with research and education in remote areas of the world and can sometimes involve unpredictable wild animals and ecosystems. The SeaKeepers staff is thrilled to be able to take these skills into our personal and professional lives to ensure that we are more prepared for emergencies knowing that every second counts!
