DISCOVERY Yacht Nymphea
Singapore, Singapore
27 June 2024
As part of the Sentosa Learning Festival, SeaKeepers Asia and Discovery Yacht Nymphaea participated in a series of experiences designed to explore themes like customer experience excellence, sustainability, and data/artificial intelligence.
Fifteen individuals from the hospitality sector embarked on an exploration trip organized by SeaKeepers Asia as part of our Educational Outreach and DISCOVERY Yacht Program. The group visited the Southern Islands to learn about sustainability and conservation efforts. This trip highlighted the innovative initiatives by the Sentosa Development Corporation (SDC) and local partners, aiming to create an eco-tourism sanctuary. The participants' curiosity and passion for marine conservation were central to the adventure.
The day began with a presentation on coral conservation, discussing the importance of coral reefs and the challenges they face due to climate change and pollution. Following that, the participants boarded Discovery Yacht Nymphaea, where Captain Haizi Aziz warmly welcomed them for a voyage to Lazarus Island. During the journey, marine biologist Dr Toh Tai Chong shared the rich history of Lazarus and St. John’s islands, revealing their evolution into vital marine hubs. He highlighted Singapore’s marine environment's multifaceted role, from recreation to conservation, and ongoing efforts like artificial reefs and marine park expansions.
Whilst on Lazarus Island, the SDC team led the group on a tour showcasing sustainable initiatives across the Southern Islands. They learned about eco-friendly practices from vendors on the island, such as providing biodegradable plastic bags made from cassava starch and a "Trash for Cash" initiative, which incentivizes responsible waste disposal.
The visit continued with an exploration of sustainable water sports management, focusing on non-motorized water activities and wildlife conservation efforts to minimize environmental impact. The tour concluded with a look into sustainable glamping, emphasizing slow living and environmental stewardship, blending modern comfort with a minimal ecological footprint.
Participants were impressed by the steps taken to protect fragile marine ecosystems, including coral reefs and seagrass beds at Eagle’s Bay. Back aboard D/Y Nymphaea, the participants reflected on their enriching experiences. They expressed gratitude for the opportunity to explore and support local eco-initiatives, realizing the potential for impactful environmental stewardship right here in Singapore.
This journey to the Southern Islands wasn’t just a tour; it was a testament to how individuals, driven by curiosity and passion, can engage with nature sustainably and meaningfully. It left participants inspired and hopeful, knowing they can contribute to conservation efforts while creating memorable experiences close to home.
