On July 23, 2024, a group of eager students from St. Gabriel’s Secondary School embarked on a learning journey to explore Singapore's marine environment. Supported by CARE Singapore, this special outing was hosted aboard the DISCOVERY Yacht LEGEND, transforming the vessel into a floating classroom. This unique educational outreach programme allowed the students to step out of their daily routine, experience something new, and open themselves to potential volunteerism and a deeper appreciation of marine conservation.
Thirteen enthusiastic students, accompanied by six dedicated teachers and staff members from the Children-At-Risk Empowerment Association (CARE Singapore), stepped aboard the D/Y LEGEND. They were greeted with warm smiles from SeaKeepers representatives and an informative safety presentation by the ever-vigilant Captain Halim, setting the stage for an unforgettable day.
The highlight of their journey was an informative lecture on Coral Conservation in Singapore, delivered by marine biologist, Ms. Sam Shu Qin from the National University of Singapore College (NUS College). With her deep knowledge and evident passion for coral conservation, Ms. Sam captivated the students, sharing fascinating facts and answering their many, curious questions. Her interactive approach made the complex subject accessible and engaging, sparking a newfound curiosity among the students.
After the lecture, the students enjoyed light refreshments, mingling with their peers and teachers. The tactile hands-on session that followed was particularly engaging. Students had the chance to examine coral specimens up close, practising coral identification with expert guidance.
As the floating classroom session ended, heartfelt farewells were exchanged. A group photo was taken, capturing the joy and camaraderie of the experience. In a touching gesture of gratitude, the students presented the SeaKeepers team with a thank-you card filled with individually written messages, expressing their heartfelt appreciation for the unforgettable journey.
Special thanks were extended to Ms Sam Shu Qin for her inspiring guidance and to the crew of D/Y LEGEND for their generous hospitality. This Floating Classroom session exemplified The International SeaKeepers Society's dedication to fostering environmental stewardship and educating the next generation about the critical importance of coral conservation.
The impact of this day is the power of hands-on education and the vital role of the community in nurturing a healthier planet for generations to come.
