Overview

On September 16, 2024, while exploring Indonesia, D/Y Traverse arrived in Poto Tano, West Sumbawa. Here, Mike, Andrea and their crew were warmly welcomed by The JARI Foundation, a dedicated marine conservation organisation that aims to increase participation of local communities in marine research, conservation and education. SeaKeepers is celebrating the work of the JARI Foundation by awarding them the International SeaKeepers Society Asia Achievement Award 2024. The Goldings were introduced to the Bajau community and shown around the local area, exploring the environment on foot and by boat, before searching for local marine delicacies using snorkels. The JARI Foundation and Bajau population shared the ways that they are actively protecting local habitats and their use of sustainable practices. Their work emphasises the importance of both local and international marine conservation efforts in protecting the global oceans from further harm. The Goldings discussed their thoughts on marine pollution and conservation, drawing on their experiences from both their current global ocean voyage and past yachting pursuits. The Goldings were inspired by the work of the JARI Foundation and their engagement with the Bajau people, and planted a tree as their final act within the community to acknowledge the importance of maintaining healthy ecosystems.
