Ahead of the SeaKeepers-WUAVF Basic Drone Operations Masterclass and Drone Competition 2024, SeaKeepers Asia conducted a “Train the Trainers” Workshop on June 29, 2024. This workshop marked the first step in an exciting journey to educate future generations on how drone technologies can significantly enhance marine conservation efforts.
Led by the SeaKeepers’ Educational Programme Planner, Marla Lise, this transformative session delved deep into the synergy between drones and ocean conservation. Participants gained profound insights into the interconnectedness of marine ecosystems and human impact, underscoring the pivotal role of drones in safeguarding our oceans.
During the six-hour workshop, the WUAVF – SC trainers were immersed in comprehensive modules covering:
- The importance of the ocean
- Singapore’s expansive marine ecosystem
- Local conservation initiatives
- Advantages, challenges, and future directions of drone use in marine conservation
The session’s highlight was the hands-on development of case study-based project proposals showcasing drone applications in marine conservation. These proposals ranged from enhancing seawall biodiversity and monitoring coral resilience in Singapore’s Southern Islands to conducting coral reef surveys in the country.
This training exercise provided a blueprint for developing the marine conservation segment for the upcoming masterclass in October, where local and international students aged 9 to 15 will have the opportunity to explore the transformative potential of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). The objectives are ambitious yet crucial: introducing UAVs in marine conservation, educating on regulatory considerations in Singapore, imparting safe UAV operations, and providing hands-on UAV flying experience.
Thanks to events like these that blend education and innovation, the next generation is empowered with knowledge of cutting-edge UAV technologies, hopefully igniting a passion for ocean conservation
